Welcome to the course on the Caregiver-Client Relationship and Self-Care

The audio and video files for the Course many be found under the following Introduction to the Course.

You also can follow the Course on the OpenLearning platform: www.openlearning.com/courses/pragmatic-empowerment-training-pet-1-introduction-to-working-with-people-and-self-care/HomePage

This course will give you competencies which will help you to set up and maintain relationships with clients and deal with yourself. Both are bases for any sort of further work in the area. These competencies are also essential in the world outside of your professional environment.

We urge you to take the material slowly and carefully, and relate it to your own experiences. The course is designed so that you learn how to work better with clients, appreciating their needs and yours, and how you can balance your private and professional lives, as well as how you can prevent burnout, which is something that everyone in this field goes through at one time or another. We welcome your input and feedback. You can do that through our contact page on this website Contact Us.

We hope that the course assists you to move further!

The next course in the series is on interpersonal and group communication, giving additional essential competencies in working with clients and with the world as a whole. We hope to have that online by about the middle of 2019.

Getting Started

The issues that we will be dealing with in this course and in PET in general are serious and sensitive. As we will emphasize throughout the course, emotions are important. Don’t repress them. Find the space for them and work with them. We will have more to say about this later in this course and in future courses.

Please work through this course seriously and systematically. Take a little time each day, or at very least every few days, and work through a page or so. Take your time, but be disciplined enough to work constantly and consistently.

Keep in mind that everything that you write in this course is public. Therefore, please be careful that you don’t reveal anything that you wouldn’t want other people to see.

The other side of the coin is that it is essential that you get your feelings out. Thus, we would urge you to write a private journal with the exercises that you do. Keep that for yourself in any event. Reveal only as much of it as you feel comfortable with.

One further point is that, it would be ideal for you to find a small group in the area in which you live/are working to discuss these issues together. The group could get together once a week or at other times that are appropriate to your situation. You also may want to make contact with other students in the course and form a small online working group appropriate to your situation and/or location. Let us know about that. We are interested in being in contact with you.

Still another point is that we are interested in forming a wider network of grassroots practitioners throughout the world dealing with these issues. Please contact us if you’re interested in becoming part of that.
